Smiles All Round At Bedford...

A modest group of nine NRR runners made the short hop to Bedfordshire for the Bedford Harriers Half Marathon on Sunday 12th December and there was plenty to celebrate with some stunning performances.

Lynton Dawson continued his amazing form with an impressive time of 1:21:54 and Gary McDaniels continues to shine storming home in 1:26:07. Talking of stars, Steph Russell doesn't know how to slow down and she smashed her PB yet again recording 1:26:57. Mark Nightingale crossed the line in a brilliant 1:31:11.

Ronnie Ambrose, who has been struggling with injury of late, managed a very respectable 1:41:38 on the hilly circuit. Another runner returning from injury was Mick Clarke who recorded 1:52:13.

Another trio of PBs followed, firstly James Anderson knocked minutes off his previous best with a 1:53:22 finish. Joanna Smith 1:54:42 and Jo Lee 1:59:27 capped an impressive day for Northampton Road Runners.

Claire's Mad Challenge...

At NRR we love mad challenges that people set themselves and Claire McDaid is the latest to...well make your jaw drop in amazement! Claire completed the November Challenge which was set on running community website "Daily Mile." The challenge was to run at least one mile a day, every day throughout the whole of November. Sounds easy? Don't you believe it!

Well Claire did it, clocking up a total of 99 miles in the month. Why didn't she do one more to make it a round 100? "I did think about it, but need a target for the next one!!" says Claire, you mean she's going to do it again?

Benidorm Marathon and Half...

Whilst some of us were freezing every body part imaginable off at Delapre, spare a thought for those poor souls who braved the sun in Benidorm on the same day.

Joking aside, two NRR heroes managed to complete the challenge in hand despite suffering bad injuries recently. Mick Clarke managed the full marathon in a fantastic 4:00:56 despite not training due to suffering broken ribs.

Dave Soloman finished the half with a damaged foot and ankle and against all medical advice. A slow for him 2:38:12 but a great effort all the same.

The pair were last seen test riding mobility scooters along Benidorm prom.

X-Country North Pole (Delapre Abbey) Sun 28th November

To leave the warm duvet, scrape the ice off the car and go out to run shows certain madness within our club. In Arctic freezing temperatures of minus 6 degrees over 30 turned out in their NRR vests and a few extra layers. A rock hard track meant there was none of the usual mud but conditions were still difficult for the 2 lap trip around the lovely parkland. Welcome support on the way round pushed everyone on and encouraged that extra push to the finish.

Both Steph Russell 4th lady and Tony Letts 13th man had their best ever results with brilliant efforts. Jocelyn Granger also had her best run and there were many healthy glows on the ladies faces as they finished. Mary Davies ran her 1st X-C league race and chased Claire hard in their continuing battle for supremacy. At the sociable end of the field Claire Spokes, Sally Garrett, Carol Whatton and Keren Irving are all running well and winning their own mini races. A strong line up of the ladies team was completed with sterling runs from Ruth Court, Mary Kingsnorth, Jo Smith, Claire McDaid, Jo Cummings and Helen Blackburn.

The men’s team is the strongest it has been for years and there are many private battles taking place within the main race. Positions change at each race and this is pushing them all. Jim Anderson and Peter Moore keep moving up the field and Lynton Dawson and Mark Nightingale are at the front end of the fields. Sporting a fine looking beard ideal for the conditions Rob Donovan had a good run but says the beard must go. Dave Blackburn took an impressive tumble and had the rest of the field including Helen run over him before getting back into the race. Keith Jellyman, Gary McDaniels, Dave Whatton and Geoff Smith continued their impressive form to record points

Next race is Sun. 19th Dec at Letchworth. We will be running the minibus.

Gotta Be Careful Here - Girls Do A Dirty Half...

Here is a report from Claire McDaid who took part in the Dirt Half at Leighton Buzzard on Saturday 20th November...

An early start for a Saturday morning, Mary Davis and I along with chief cheer leader (Stuart) headed over to Leighton Buzzard for the the dirty half challenge - A half marathon trail run. It was only on Thursday night (after looking up directions on the web site) that I noticed the elevation for the race. I'm not a huge fan of hills and this one scared the hell out of me.

We arrived at Cedars upper school at about 8.50am and had plenty of time to collect our numbers and find the start line. The fog from the previous night had lifted but the air was still damp and very chilly. We had come prepared and had plenty of layers on. About 500 runners took part in the race, a lot were from local clubs from this area of the country, although I did meet some runners from Devon and one from Suffolk.

The race started out along the tow-path for the first 3 miles, we then ran through a local village and in to some lanes. At mile 5 Mary turned to me and said "never again" we were both starting to feel that this was a very tough course.

I was counting down to mile 6 and the mile climb up THAT hill to mile 7.
It began..... we huffed, puffed, ran, jogged, plodded and briskly walked until we reached the top. We had a small downhill on some road (a light relief) before we were given another steep climb. The course took us in to the forest and more climbing before some steep downhills, but it was imposable to to make up time and run down as the forest floor was covered in wet leaves, tree roots and stumps.

We left the forest at mile 10 and into some boggy fields. Our feet got cold and wet as we ran through some big muddy puddles ( only just keeping hold of our shoes in the mud) and back onto the towpath as we picked up the pace to the finish.

Finally we crossed the finish line together. The official time was 2.09.48 for both of us and Mary was 3rd in her category.

We decided at the beginning that we would run together and this was not the race for PB's. This was my first trail race and Mary had been of with a knee injury for just over a week.

The course was very well signed posted throughout and there was 4 water stops in total. After the race tea, soup and sandwiches were available in the school hall with chance to warm up and see the winners receive there awards. Mary and I both really enjoyed the race and the scenery was very pretty.

Dunstable Cross Country...

Cross-Country Dunstable Sun 14th Nov.

The deep, heavy mud of the clay quarries of Dunstable seemed somehow fitting for Remembrance Sunday. A fine crowd of 26 containing a number with heavy legs from Saturday at Seagrave made sure we were noticed in another big field. The cavalry charge as we started was a terrifying sight for those out for a quiet Sunday stroll.

Our ladies team keeps on getting stronger at every race. Ruth Court joined us sporting a pair of spotless new off-roaders, they will never be as clean again. A top 50 finish and our 3rd scoring lady was a great debut. Young guns Steph Russell and Jo Lee led home the ladies to a very good team score. Claire McDaid seemed to enjoy her 1st X-C with us loving the muddy course and running a good race.

For the men it was a reversal of places with Tony Letts getting the better of Keith Jellyman this time in the battle to be top dog. Gary McDaniels’ blisters from Saturday slowed him slightly but still produced a good run being chased by Mark Nightingale. This was Mark’s 1st X-C after doing years of road running and he proved to us all that he can run in the mud and promises to be back for more. Needing a recovery run after last week’s marathon Lynton Dawson ran within himself and still produced a good run and kept his trainers clean somehow. Claire Spokes, Jocelyn Granger, Peter Moores, Jim Anderson and Mark Glenn are now classed as X-C veterans and joined the other regulars in hard races against friends and rivals you meet from the other clubs.

There are only 2 weeks to clean the mud off before we meet again at Delapre Abbey on 28th November. Details are on www.threecountiesx-c.co.uk under event3.

Seagrave Wolds Challenge Saturday 13th November

Races are rated by records, T-shirts, PB potential, sheer numbers or chip timing. This race has none of these and is rated by the quality of the fruit crumble dished out at the finish. A superb small village run or walk which involves a 16 mile slog around some very scenic parts of Leicestershire and lots of cake eating.

Nine of us came along, six returning for a second time with John Fleming being so keen he was No.1 on the entry list. He does like his puddings! Steph Russell, Gary McDaniels and Jim Anderson joined us this year and these were the stars of the day. Gary was 1st home for the club and had the blisters to prove the effort he put in. He is now a fan of the silly off-road epics. Steph took advantage of Maree’s tired marathon legs and came out on top for the first time. The wealth of running knowledge that Maree is passing on seems to be a great help as Steph is flying. The Old Men of the team can’t keep up with her now and she won’t wait for us anymore.

Jim was talked into his longest ever run to date and thoroughly enjoyed his day producing a good run which has convinced him that he can do a marathon. In this race you stop for tea and cakes at the checkpoints, help each other over the stiles, and take in the views. There are no medals or shirts but the crumble and custard is fantastic and I am sure John is already planning to enter next year.

Rugby 10 and Cart Hill...

A couple of years ago the Rugby Ten used to be a modest, flat two lap route around a resiviour. The organisers have changed the route now and it runs from Barby village and through some beautiful countryside with rolling hills, including Cart Hill, a killer climb of over one mile.

Five of NRR's finely tuned athletes rose to the challenge recording some great times. Ronnie Ambrose bagged a PB with a time of 1:12:34. Next home was Mark Kennedy in 1:16:04, just four seconds over his PB. Jim Anderson made his 10 mile debut and judging his half marathon times, he was delighted with a 1:23:39 finish.
Next to the ladies and Sue Thopson was delighted to have entered the race so early that she was sporting the race number 1 on her vest. She finished in 1:35:30. Christie Ford also made her 10 mile debut and finished in 1:36:01.

Stopsley Cross Country...

Stopsley X-Country Sunday 24th October.

A huge turn-out of 500 odd runners for the 1st cross-country of the season included 27 of our finest athletes. Newcomers were nervously asking about mud, hills, shoes, where, why and how, whilst gnarled x-c vets just gave the “You’ll be Okay” answer with that knowing look in their eyes.

In the ladies race Steph Russell keeps getting higher in the results. Jocelyn Granger ran a storming debut as 2nd scorer and a new style Jo Lee scored 3rd. A good sign was that regular scorers of the past are now struggling to make the podium. The depth of runners means that good runs from Mary Kingsnorth and Jo Smith left them just behind the three required scorers. All runners placings are invaluable however as your score pushes someone else from another team further down.

Debbie Holmes, Kirsty Braithwaite and Claire Spokes had good 1st runs with us and will soon be heading up the results board with more races. Sue Thompson, Pauline Horne, Keren Irving, Carol Whatton and Sally Garrett were all happy to be back in the mud where they always excel.

The men’s team also had a number of new faces to liven things up. Keith Jellyman, back from his triathlon ran a great race staying just ahead of Tony Letts with Gary McDaniels giving us three in the top 50. One of many stars of the day was Mark Kennedy who chased a re-invigorated Dave Whatton to the finish and took a number of prize scalps on the way. Ronnie Ambrose made final scorer and regular points men John Fleming and Geoff Smith were left just outside but chased hard. Tom Sullivan and Dave Blackburn were joined in the pack by new stars Mark Glenn, Jim Anderson and Peter Moore who will all learn from their 1st X-C runs since school.

A great start to the season and all have promised to come back for more. Why not join them? X-C is different from road races, times or PBs aren’t important, just a tough, fun race in beautiful countryside.

Next race is 14th Nov at Dunstable details will be published shortly.

Last Friday, Jim Anderson handed his membership form to Jo to join the club. Nothing special you may say... but Jim has helped us reach a milestone at the club. It means we now have 100 members registered!

Welcome to Jim and all other new members lately, it was great to see the meeting point bursting at the seams last Friday on what is normally the quieter of the two club nights.

Mary The Star In The Garden Of Eden...

Eden Project Half
The star of the weekend 10th October 2010 was Mary Davies who completed the Eden Project Half in a time of 2:16:28. Mary was the 1st vet lady home (55-59) which was a complete surprise as she were sitting in the garden at Eden enjoying the sunshine with a free pasty and a glass of beer. When presentations to the prize winners were being made, she heard NRR mentioned and thought, "That can only be me." and dashed to receive a nice bottle of wine with her name on it!

Run 10... The Home Town Run...

A large Northampton Road Runners contingent took part in the Run 10 Northamptonshire on Sunday 3rd October. The new route began at Sixfields Stadium and took in a tour of the town centre before returning to a grandstand finish just outside the main stand. Luckily the weather held out and the rain didn’t arrive until afterwards. This year’s organisation was near perfect as around 2000 people lined up for a staggered start with the 5K going off first followed by the 10K.

Maree Jesson was first home for the club with a great time of 40:31 and Ronnie Ambrose wasn’t far behind in 42:04. Next a storming run by John Fleming as he chalked up 42:52 and Jo Windrum flew over the line in 44:33. Mark Kennedy finished in 44:38 just ahead of Nigel Osbourne in 44:59. Richard Franks and Dave Knowles crossed the line in 46:59 and 47:13 respectively followed by Ruth Court in 47:11 and Tom Sullivan in 49:17.

Claire Spokes made her return to racing following a back operation and was delighted to finish in 36:31 and be part of a winning 5K team called “Dead On Arrival.”

There were plenty of NRR supporters on the day, Pauline Horne was spotted in the crowd and Mick Clarke and Spike were on hand with the teardrop banner to cheer us all at 1K and also at the finish.

High Achievers At Cransley

Northampton Road Runners turned out in force at the Cransley Hospice Road Race on Sunday 19th September. This popular event offers a 10K and a half marathon challenge over a scenic undulating route from Cranford. The half takes a detour through Grafton Underwood towards Brigstock and back. For this years event, runners were treated to cooler conditions than previous years but a strong headwind in the second half of the race meant for a tough finish.

Over the half distance, Gary McDaniels recorded an impressive 16th place finish overall with a time of 1:25:37. Only one place behind was Lynton Dawson in 1:26:15. Maree Jesson scooped another award, second lady finisher crossing the line in 1:30:54.

Next home was Ronnie Ambrose, who recorded his best time on this course with 1:37:16 and Mark Kennedy also achieved a similar feat with a course best of 1:41:08.

Richard Franks was next to finish in 1:50:22 only seconds ahead of Mick Clarke in 1:50:43. Dave Blackburn crossed the line in 1:53:17 and Helen Blackburn came home in2:24:41 to complete the half runners.

Dunstable Challenge (Downs Also Go Up...)

A handful of a mad NRR runners made their way to Dunstable on Sunday 12th September for the Dunstable Challenge. The "Challange" consisted of a half marathon, a 20 mile race or a full marathon but their was only one catch, you must run armed with a map. The route began up an energy sapping hill before taking in some breath-taking scenery from the top of the Downs (the climb was worth it). About every type of terrain was covered from grass, footpaths, mud, road, trail and even a ploughed field. Only a water crossing was missing!

It certianly wasn't a PB course but there was a genuine buzz at the finish with many runners swapping stories over a rolls and a cake. This race comes highly recomended to runners who fancy something different and the entry fee was a bargain at £8.

To the performences and four runners completed the 20 mile challenge; Maree Jesson contunied her great recent form with a 12th place finish and a time of 2:43:56 although her running skills are certainly better than her map reading, she clocked up 21.5 miles. Mark Garrett was the 2nd MV50 and 19th overall in a time of 2:53:05 only seconds ahead of Geoff Smith in 2:53:25. Ronnie Ambrose came home in 3:12:18.

Mark Kennedy opted for his favourite distance of a half marathon and was pleased with a 1:53:15 finish and a placing of 13th overall.

Keith's Budapest Tri Report

A little while ago you may remember that NRR donated funds to member Keith Jellyman to go towards equipment for his triathlon ventures. Here is Keith's latest update on his success...

All home and dry now. The sprint race which I was in was a 750m swim, 20k bike and a flat out 5k mad sprint along the embankment of the Danube, and then across one of the main bridges over into the finish.

What a race despite the truly abysmal weather conditions. Torrential rain almost everyday! I completed in a time of 1:09:18, which puts me 29th in my age category out of 46, and around 200 or something out of 500 overall. The winner came in on a time of 58:36. Pleased with my time definitely although I should really have been a couple of minutes faster on the run, but my stomach was playing up. I think I drank too much water on the bike haha never mind. Hopefully next year I can try and get my time below 1:05, certainly some time to be knocked off from my swim too.

What can I say briefly, well my parents and I arrived down at the race centre at 5:30am when it was still dark and tipping it down. My wave started off at 7:15. Talk about a flying start made by many, couldn't believe it, within the first few seconds I was already a couple of metres behind. The swim otherwise was a loop pretty much of a small harbour. Then it was a mad dash up a little beach to the transition, which might as well have been a bog pretty much.

Bike leg I felt I was flying, new bike working a treat. The course was dead pan flat, so it was a true test of speed. I think I maintained about 24mph average, so pleased to bits.

The run was probably the most thrilling part, although I could have done without the bloated stomach. An almost flat out sprint all the way up the embankment, quite gruelling due to the company. It was a Mexican looking chap in front leading the way, and hot on my tail another GB athlete, and hot on his tail a pesky Irish individual. A real good race all the way up, but sadly pipped at the post, but still very pleased, but less water next time!

Also one medal and fourth place was picked up by the Northants Tri Club. Stacey Penn got a bronze in her age group with a time of 1:08:08, and Paul Jennings came in fourth in his with a time of 1:04:05.

Maree ends the season winning her first ever Duathlon...

The final race of the 2010 Silverstone Duathlon Series came to a climax on Tuesday September 7th.

Hosted, at the marvellous Porsche Experience Centre competitors completed 2 laps of the Porsche Circuits running, 3 laps of the full Silverstone Grand Prix track on the bike and repeated the first run again to give an approximate 2 mile / 11 mile / 2 mile route.

Maree Jesson was the only lady under 1 hour winning in a time of 59.54, another amazing PB. Rumour has it that Maree is spending more time training with the boys on their bikes than she is on her running lately... Clearly she is reaping the rewards!

A bit of a beast...

Finally the NRR on tour crew completed Poole ACs The "Beast", am off-road half marathon.

Mark Garrett finished the race which is beast by nature too, in a time of 1:43:49. Where there's an off road, you guarantee that Geoff is there, Geoff Smith finished in 1:48:05. Another off roadie fan, Ronnie Ambrose completed the challenge in 1:52:17.

61 Mark Garrett 1:43:49
64 Rich the Ambulance 1:44:08 (on loan to NRR as tour guide)
91 Geoff Smiffffff 1:48:05
120 Ronnie Ambrose 1:52:17

A tough race with fantastic sea views, a must for the off-road fans.

Bristol Half...

Maree Jesson was also in action on 5th September finishing 9th lady vet at the Bristol Half Marathon in a time of 1:29:07.

407th Maree Jesson 1:29:07 35th lady, 9th vet lady

Running for the skies...

Whilst some were at Bedford, others were at Billing for the annual Air Ambulance Fun Run. No times are recorded but the following runners participated in the 10K;

Chris Ford
Sue Thompson
Nigel Osborne

There were a couple who decided on doing one lap of the course and they were;

Lynton Dawson - 18 mins
Mark Kennedy - 20:02

This is a great event and raises a good amounnt for the Warwickshire and Northampton Air Ambulance.

Bedford Harriers 10K - 5th September

The 5th September was a big race day with NRR runners taking part in races here there and everywhere...

A great pair attended the Bedford Harriers 10k both from different scales of the running spectrum, Mick Clarke who is, well, very experienced and Gemma Francis completed her first ever race for the club in a time of 56:20. Mick came home in 49:22 and was the 1st in his age category.

Moulton 10K Report...

2010 Moulton 10K Report

Sunday 29th August saw the 5th annual running of the Moulton 10K hosted by Northampton Road Runners. The unseasonable rain held off for 227 runners to complete this beautiful challenging countryside route that takes a journey from Moulton to Pitsford and back. The famous ford at Spectacle Lane took no victims this year though.

Mark Powell of Tipton Harriers won the race by over one minute in a time of 33:10. In second place was Andrew McKenna of Wellingborough and District in 34:11, who was also over a minute ahead of the next finisher. That 3rd place went to Corby’s Troy Garrity who crossed the line in 35:47.

Jo Pulsford of Rugby and Northampton, won the ladies race with a time of 40:52 and Northampton Road Runners’ very own Maree Jesson was second in 41:48. Third on the podium with a time of 42:49 was Elaine O’Sullivan of Wellingborough and District.

One of the stories of the day was the 24th place finish of Jordan Simmons, the15 year old of Rugby and Northampton finished the course in 39:54 and shows he is a star of the future.

Greg Spellman was the first veteran home, the Rugby and Northampton runner was 7th overall with a time of 36:55. Andy Pacey of Silson Joggers was a place behind both in the category and the race in 37:27.

Other local clubs were well represented at the race, Wootton’s leading runner on the day was Lee Berrill in 18th with a time of 38:33 and Davetry’s Keith Moreman was 26th overall in 40:33 and won the MV60 category. Kettering were lead home by Steve Giles in 38:13

For the home club, Northampton Road Runners, the ever impressive Lynton Dawson recorded a time of 38:41 and finished 19th overall. Hartley Hancock, fresh from his recent Ironman success, finished in 46:13 and Des McGrath broke the hour in 57:46.

Moulton 10K - Thank You Everyone - A Huge Success!!!

Congratulations and thanks to everyone involved with our race.

Mary's Long Walk...

On Saturday 10th July 2010, Mary Davies fancied a challenge with a difference! At 1am (yes am) she set off with a group of nine to complete the Lyke Wake Walk which covered approx 40 miles. Out of the nine, only two finished including Mary, in 17 hours. Although she completed the mammoth challenge, Mary was a little disappointed not to get round the route a little quicker. "I would have liked to have completed it in 15 hours but for various reasons (like getting lost) it was not possible. The terrain varied from very steep inclines and descents, to flatish boggy marshland and barren moors which went on for ever."

Fell runners/runners were also taking part in this challenge which was well supported and with check points and drinks at stages across the 40 miles. Just a thought for the likes of Mick and Harley who may like to take part in next years race?

Maree's at it again.... A hat-tick....

Belper Rugby Rover 30k Run Derbyshire 15 August

A Challenging multi terrain route starting and finishing at Belper Rugby Club. The route uses public footpaths, including parts of the Mid Shires Way & Derwent Valley Walk, bridle ways, Roman roads, minor roads, through ancient woodlands, offering far reaching views over the Derwent and Trent valley's.

In Maree’s quest to find hard, quirky races, she landed on a real gem here. This was hard as nails with pretty much everything going on. She was charged by a cow, fell and slid 10 yards on her knees through 8 inch thick mud, had to negotiate many stiles, gates, walls (got ankles stuck in one), managed some pretty tough climbs, negotiated some break-neck downhill sections and avoid the temptation to have a glass of wine after because, she was the driver home, her comrades took advantage as usual and had pints to their relieve pain!

Maree worked through the field she was 6th to start off with, in the last half mile from 4th to 3rd, a podium finish! A time of 2hr 30 and 22 secs.

Summer Fun in the Rain...

Colin Bricher took part in the Summer Fun 10K at Moreton Morell, Warwickshire. A multi-terrain race which despite its name turned out to be at most 9k in the rain. The fun included climbing fences, hills, mud, nettles, horses and cows. Colin was extremely pleased with a top half finish in difficult conditions

Maree's On Wheels...

If she isn't content winning trophies in her running shoes, Maree Jesson now likes to throw a bike into the equation as well.

Silverstone Duathlon - Maree on the grid - Podium finish 3rd and PB!

Return from International training camp and training paying dividends...

After looking at one point like it might become a triathlon due to heavy rain during the day (is it really August?). Maree braved the British weather and start of the 2 mile run, 10 mile bike and 2 mile run event on August 12th.

Female senior (3rd lady overall) Overall time: 1:03:42.

Well done Maree...

Friday Five...

A good crowd or NRR runners turned out for the Friday Five, one of the favourites on the running calender. Gary McDaniels raced home first for the club in 31.32 and Maree Jesson made her return on the local scene with a 33.09, 3rd in her age category. Steph Russell recorded an impressive 35.21 on the hilly course and Richard Franks finished in 37.18.

Next to cross the line was Sue White in 40.34 and club legend Micky Bhogal finished in 41.26. Wendy Parker came home next in 43.20 and then Colin Bricher in 43.53. Sue Thonson was 3rd in her age category in 46.06 and Patrick Breyden finished in 48.17. Keren Irving broke the one hour barrier in 59.06.

Keith - The Superstar...

Some of you may know that Keith Jellyman and his triathlon successes. Recently NRR donated some money to Keith to help him fund his equipment, here is a recent email update from him on his progress...

Just thought I'd drop you and update, which you can pass on if you want :)

Last Sunday competed in the Blithfield triathlon, it was a bit a uncertain as to whether I would be able to do the event because of a dodgy left leg, but a bit of sports massage worked wonders. The race was another qualifier, namely for next year's Europeans for the standard distance. Needless to say I was just glad to do the race, but completed in times of;

Overall: 02:17:41

Swim: 00:25:46 (1.5km)
T1: 00:01:26
Cycle: 01:09:49 (40km)
T2: 00:00:57
Run: 00:39:40 (10km)

14th in age category and 81st overall.
http://www.stuweb.co.uk/swp/default.asp?a=2&e=436

In terms of getting a qualification time I made it, but just need to wait and see now if I get a place. You need to be within 120% of the winner's time in your age group, and I got 115.3%. In any case I've already pre-qualified because I'm through to this year's worlds. I would prefer to try and get a standard distance place though...

Race otherwise was real good fun, mind the swim I just felt tired throughout?? Not sure what I was up to really considering my pool time has been as low as 22 minutes in the past. Maybe the 5am wake up might have something to do with it to have breakfast. Cycle course was basically two laps down from the reservoir and back up the hill. Run was gruelling considering I haven't been doing much and on slippery gravel. I noticed Chris, from Northants Tri, who started 5 minutes after me was a little too close for comfort so upped the pace despite feeling queasy!

Off end of tomorrow now to pick up my new TT bike woohoo! I'm hoping to really knock my time down with it. The bike I've been riding on for the past 6 years or so I bought on the cheap off a mate, and it has never really fit properly, but now working and not in university completely skint... Needless to say I caught a car up on the test bike (the general manager of Merida UK's own personal bike which he kindly leant!) and then overtook it on a slight uphill. Photos at link below:

Next race is Bedford Classic, the Nationals... Maybe you might fancy a go since it's only down the road.

Wellington Boots...

Wellington Boots were not needed for the Wellingborough Five on Sunday 1st August as a nice little crowd made the short hop up the road for another favourite on the race calander.

Gary McDaniels took to the streets and finished in an impressive 31:08 only one place ahead of Lynton Dawson in 31:11. Steph Russell flew round the countryside and finished in 34:12 and Charlotte Yarker continued her good form with a 36:49 finish. Richard Franks crossed the line in 38:09 and Tom Sullivan wasn't far behind in 38:57. Mick Clarke also broke the 40 minute barrier in 39:29. Mary Kingsnorth came home in 42:49 and Alan Hackett finished in 42:49.

Brecon 10...

A brilliant start to the summer holidays, Maree Jesson goes camping in Wales! The “BRECON 10” took place in the beautiful and picturesque market town of Brecon, Powys, at the foothills of the well-known Brecon Beacons. The course covers an interesting and very scenic route, starting and finishing at Brecon’s athletic track. Maree won her category 1st vet 35 Time - 1:08:44

Oh No, Not Another MK Half...

Some great times were recorded at the flat Milton Keynes Half on 18th July. Tony Letts finished in 1:25:08 on seconds ahead of Gary McDaniels in 1:25:46. Lynton Dawson continued his great form with a 1:27:50 finish and Steph Russell impressed finishing 8th lady overall in 1:34:08.

Ronnie Ambrose crossed the line in 1:40:17 and Mark Glenn just broke the two hour barrier in 1:59:19.

Congratulations to Darren Byfield and Wendy Parker for completing their first ever half marathons, their fantastic achievements were timed at 2:01:57 and 2:02:21 respectively. Richard Franks was next home in 2:05:49 and Helen Blackburn finished in 2:20:18.

Adderbury Spires Half...

A hot day greeted runners at the scenic off road Adderbury Half. The course came highly recommend, although there were some organisational problems this year, the NRR trio enjoyed the beautiful course which was actually measured just over 13.1 miles.

Geoff Smith finished in 1:43 a couple of minutes ahead of Ronnie Ambrose in 1:45, although a wrong turning cost Ronnie precious time. John Fleming came home in a very respectable 1:46.

Swapping The Running Shoes For Wheels...

Maree Jesson ditches her running shoes and pulled out her racer for the inaugural Specialized Silverstone Sportive 100 mile bike ride which took place on July 4th in very sunny and somewhat breezy conditions. Maree said it was, "An enjoyable, but, tough ride, a brisk wind featured heavily!" Maree's time was 6:02:36 and she was 4th Senior Lady overall!

How Many Roundabouts? MK 10K...

The East Midlands Grand Prix series came to a close on 29th June at Milton Keynes. The cross country minibus was dusted off again, Alan hoarding a handful of the team down the motorway to meet those who made the trip by car, rail and motorbike.

Conditions were extremely muggy meaning that the majority of the field slowed down for the second half of the race. Tony Letts completed his 6th race of the series in a time of 38:01 and finished 16th overall in his age category.

Lynton Dawson finished in 41:03 just ahead of Ronnie Ambrose in 42:15. Next to cross the line was Mark Kennedy in 44:37. First lady on the night was Charlotte Yarker in 47:20, recording an impressive PB. Tom Sullivan came home in 49:35 with Rob Donovan chalking up a 51:43 finish.

Patrick Breydin finished in 64:23 and Alan Hackett literally limped over the line in 74:03 after injuring his back.

Colworth Weekend Marathon Challenge 18-20th June

A merry band of campers set off for this three race weekend in flip-flops and shorts expecting a weekend of glorious sunshine. Unfortunately the North wind did blow and it was a very cold couple of nights in the sleeping bags. We were joined by others doing single days in what is a great local event near Bedford. Well Done Keith...

Keith Jellyman has qualified to represent Great Britain in his age group at the 2010 ITU Triathlon World Champs in Budapest in September. I am sure we all congratulate him and wish him the very best.
Fifteen runners were on show at the Foxton Five (the newly reformed Harborough Five). Starting at Foxton Locks, runners did a lap of the field before running the old route in reverse. The first two miles descended nicely before a mile long climb between three and four. The final mile was mainly downhill for a quick finish and included another lap of the field.

Tony Letts was first home in 29:40 with Lynton Dawson close behind with a 30:36 finish. Ronnie Ambrose was next in 33:16 followed by Mark Kennedy in 34:20. Martin Baker was pleased with a 36:42 time and Tom Sullivan crossed the line in 38:56. Fresh from his recent trip to Spain, Mick Clarke recorded a time of 39:30.

Jo's Tri Success

AGM & Awards Night - Wednesday 19th May...

The club's AGM will take place on Wednesday 19th May after the run. We will start with a run around the field. For those who haven't taken part before, the course is marked out in quarter mile sections and we run for 30 minutes. The idea is to see how far you can go but you can run at your own pace should you wish. There is no pressure.

Afterwards, the AGM will take place in the Village Hall (next to where we meet for club runs). The committee urges as many members to come along to find out more about our plans for the next year and to hear a review of the year gone. It is lighthearted. There will also be a presentation of the club's annual awards, again, please come along to appreciate and celebrate these achievements.
