Gotta Be Careful Here - Girls Do A Dirty Half...

Here is a report from Claire McDaid who took part in the Dirt Half at Leighton Buzzard on Saturday 20th November...

An early start for a Saturday morning, Mary Davis and I along with chief cheer leader (Stuart) headed over to Leighton Buzzard for the the dirty half challenge - A half marathon trail run. It was only on Thursday night (after looking up directions on the web site) that I noticed the elevation for the race. I'm not a huge fan of hills and this one scared the hell out of me.

We arrived at Cedars upper school at about 8.50am and had plenty of time to collect our numbers and find the start line. The fog from the previous night had lifted but the air was still damp and very chilly. We had come prepared and had plenty of layers on. About 500 runners took part in the race, a lot were from local clubs from this area of the country, although I did meet some runners from Devon and one from Suffolk.

The race started out along the tow-path for the first 3 miles, we then ran through a local village and in to some lanes. At mile 5 Mary turned to me and said "never again" we were both starting to feel that this was a very tough course.

I was counting down to mile 6 and the mile climb up THAT hill to mile 7.
It began..... we huffed, puffed, ran, jogged, plodded and briskly walked until we reached the top. We had a small downhill on some road (a light relief) before we were given another steep climb. The course took us in to the forest and more climbing before some steep downhills, but it was imposable to to make up time and run down as the forest floor was covered in wet leaves, tree roots and stumps.

We left the forest at mile 10 and into some boggy fields. Our feet got cold and wet as we ran through some big muddy puddles ( only just keeping hold of our shoes in the mud) and back onto the towpath as we picked up the pace to the finish.

Finally we crossed the finish line together. The official time was 2.09.48 for both of us and Mary was 3rd in her category.

We decided at the beginning that we would run together and this was not the race for PB's. This was my first trail race and Mary had been of with a knee injury for just over a week.

The course was very well signed posted throughout and there was 4 water stops in total. After the race tea, soup and sandwiches were available in the school hall with chance to warm up and see the winners receive there awards. Mary and I both really enjoyed the race and the scenery was very pretty.

Dunstable Cross Country...

Cross-Country Dunstable Sun 14th Nov.

The deep, heavy mud of the clay quarries of Dunstable seemed somehow fitting for Remembrance Sunday. A fine crowd of 26 containing a number with heavy legs from Saturday at Seagrave made sure we were noticed in another big field. The cavalry charge as we started was a terrifying sight for those out for a quiet Sunday stroll.

Our ladies team keeps on getting stronger at every race. Ruth Court joined us sporting a pair of spotless new off-roaders, they will never be as clean again. A top 50 finish and our 3rd scoring lady was a great debut. Young guns Steph Russell and Jo Lee led home the ladies to a very good team score. Claire McDaid seemed to enjoy her 1st X-C with us loving the muddy course and running a good race.

For the men it was a reversal of places with Tony Letts getting the better of Keith Jellyman this time in the battle to be top dog. Gary McDaniels’ blisters from Saturday slowed him slightly but still produced a good run being chased by Mark Nightingale. This was Mark’s 1st X-C after doing years of road running and he proved to us all that he can run in the mud and promises to be back for more. Needing a recovery run after last week’s marathon Lynton Dawson ran within himself and still produced a good run and kept his trainers clean somehow. Claire Spokes, Jocelyn Granger, Peter Moores, Jim Anderson and Mark Glenn are now classed as X-C veterans and joined the other regulars in hard races against friends and rivals you meet from the other clubs.

There are only 2 weeks to clean the mud off before we meet again at Delapre Abbey on 28th November. Details are on www.threecountiesx-c.co.uk under event3.

Seagrave Wolds Challenge Saturday 13th November

Races are rated by records, T-shirts, PB potential, sheer numbers or chip timing. This race has none of these and is rated by the quality of the fruit crumble dished out at the finish. A superb small village run or walk which involves a 16 mile slog around some very scenic parts of Leicestershire and lots of cake eating.

Nine of us came along, six returning for a second time with John Fleming being so keen he was No.1 on the entry list. He does like his puddings! Steph Russell, Gary McDaniels and Jim Anderson joined us this year and these were the stars of the day. Gary was 1st home for the club and had the blisters to prove the effort he put in. He is now a fan of the silly off-road epics. Steph took advantage of Maree’s tired marathon legs and came out on top for the first time. The wealth of running knowledge that Maree is passing on seems to be a great help as Steph is flying. The Old Men of the team can’t keep up with her now and she won’t wait for us anymore.

Jim was talked into his longest ever run to date and thoroughly enjoyed his day producing a good run which has convinced him that he can do a marathon. In this race you stop for tea and cakes at the checkpoints, help each other over the stiles, and take in the views. There are no medals or shirts but the crumble and custard is fantastic and I am sure John is already planning to enter next year.

Rugby 10 and Cart Hill...

A couple of years ago the Rugby Ten used to be a modest, flat two lap route around a resiviour. The organisers have changed the route now and it runs from Barby village and through some beautiful countryside with rolling hills, including Cart Hill, a killer climb of over one mile.

Five of NRR's finely tuned athletes rose to the challenge recording some great times. Ronnie Ambrose bagged a PB with a time of 1:12:34. Next home was Mark Kennedy in 1:16:04, just four seconds over his PB. Jim Anderson made his 10 mile debut and judging his half marathon times, he was delighted with a 1:23:39 finish.
Next to the ladies and Sue Thopson was delighted to have entered the race so early that she was sporting the race number 1 on her vest. She finished in 1:35:30. Christie Ford also made her 10 mile debut and finished in 1:36:01.

40 - 1:12:34 - Ronnie AMBROSE
58 - 1:16:04 - Mark KENNEDY
93 - 1:23:39 - Jim ANDERSON
137- 1:35:30 - Sue THOMPSON
141- 1:36:01 - Christie FORD

Colin's Horror Run...

On 30th October, sometime around midnight (well 11.00pm) Colin Bricher took part in the scary Halloween Horror Race at Moreton Morrell. The 4 mile multi-terrain route takes place in pitch darkness! Colin finished 24th overall in a time of bang on 40:00 minutes. He was also the 1st M60.
