Rugby Half Marathon

Five NRR members took part in the first ever Rugby Half Marathon on Sunday 13th July.

Starting in the town centre, the route headed through Rugby School before a trip out into the countryside.  There were a couple of playful hills on the course and trips through Barby and Kilsby villages where locals were out to cheer on the pack.  At 12 miles was a surprise lap around a running track too before a huge cheering crowd at the finish line.

All in all, the organisation was brilliant and the marshals were friendly.  There was a great little race village at the finish too.

Finishers were treated to a pick and mix style buffet with jelly babies, cereals and fruit at the end plus a great medal and technical t-shirt.

Desborough 10K
You know when a race has everything?  The all new Desborough 10K was lovingly crafted by the organisers to include a beautiful course - mixed with fields and road, really friendly marshals, a great atmosphere from lots of local entrants, a really good value entry fee, an excellent goodie bag (including a bottle of wine) plus the bonus of chip timing!  Seriously, what more could you ask for?

Well to add to that, 32 NRR members completed the race and there were plenty of PBs to boast as well.

Well done to everyone for some great runs, special mentions to Steven Randall for his first ever competitive race and for Karen Eke for displaying the most energy overall after the event.

Triple NRR winners at Coombe Abbey.

Sunday 28th June 2015

The multi lap half marathon grass trail at Coombe Abbey was the latest venue for a fantastic result for NRR runners. Rosanna Andrews came 1st overall in a great off-road time of 1:28:02. The result was the first time a Go-Beyond event has seen a 1st lady overall. Well done Rosanna.

Jon Dilworth battled his off-road demons to complete the course in 1:51:50 and finish 1st MV60. Epic!

Penny Andrews faced up to the challenge of a full marathon over the trail and achieved 1st FV50 and third lady overall in a good time of 3:52:25 completing a hat-trick of NRR firsts for the event.

Two Amazing Feats of Endeavor

Fell runners Martin Rowe and Jazzy Banks completed another two amazing feats at the weekend.

The 1st feat was the Wharfedale 3 Peaks Challenge, 22 mile fell race in the Yorkshire dales. Three climbs over Birks Fell (610m), down the valley up Buckden Pike (702m) and over Great Whernside (704m) then a fast downhill to the picturesque village of Kettlewell.

Five hours of running in sunshine. After a relaxing shower in the campsite, some five minute walk from the race finish the devoured pie & mushy pea lunch, tea and cake supplied as part of the £15 race fee. The rest of the day we spent in one of the 3 village pubs talking to fellow runners and supping real ale, bliss.

The second feat had to be seen to be believed and all the more impressive because we had witnessed others twice the size beaten by the sheer size of the task. After eating everything in her race bag, including a full lunch and 3 pints of Bitter. Jazzy, set out and finished the largest meat & potato pie with full accompaniment of vegetables and roast potatoes that I have ever seen. And here’s the photographic evidence.

Martin said, "I can recommend the race. The weekend is fantastic, well organised but with a laid back attitude runners and walkers can do 1 peak (6 miles), 2 peaks (11 miles) or 3 peaks (22 miles). Park the car, pitch the tent run and retire to the pub, for some awesome grub."

This was a couple of weeks after completing the Scafell Trail Marathon.

Kids' Marathon Challenge

On Sunday 7th June, 42 children entered the Kids' Marathon Challenge at The Obelisk Centre.

It was boys against girls with the boys winning a close run event by around a mere 100 meters. Both teams ran 64 laps (13 miles) making a total of the marathon distance.

Families came to watch, it was a lovely afternoon in the sun, great support from NRR marshals. Mum's race and dad's race at the end concluding with kids and big kids enjoying getting soaked with a water fight.

£434 was raised for Kidsaid, a local charity.

Massive thanks to everyone who took part and supported the event and a special mention to Paula Pinney for her tireless effort in arranging this event for the second year running.

Round five of the East Midlands Grand Prix takes us to a lovely undulating course in Banbury.

Neolithic Marathon

Walk it or run it!  Even run and walk it, they all work.  The Neolithic Marathon sounds tough and a route around Stonehenge must be.

Darren and Suzaane Baldwin completed the route with Darren getting round in 4:48 which he says is a PB, despite the hills and sticky mud. Paula Pinney took the walking option and rumours have it that Dave Solly took the driving option.  This has yet to be confirmed.

Milton Keynes Marathon & Half

The Milton Keynes Bank Holiday Marathon Festival is short distance for Northampton Road Runners and five of our members made the trip.

The event is well supported and takes in a boring but flat half of the course for those seeking a potential PB but a few sharp twists and turns can soon throw your pace off balance.

Starting at some stadium in Milton Keynes, the route heads towards the centre along dual carriageways and around many of the infamous roundabouts and offers plenty of room for runners as the field starts to spread out.  After a few squares around the centre with a great atmosphere, the route heads back on itself before splitting at 10 miles for the marathoners to take in a more scenic route heading to the country.

The half teases runners by going past the finish, then the prettiest part of the course around a lake and then back into the stadium for a grandstand finish for a great reception.

The route is lined with enthusiastic locals ready to cheer everyone on in the May Day sun.  Two miles from the end was a lively group offering runners a cup of beer should they need one.

There were some great performances from our members.  Eamon Kennedy decided to celebrate a well earned week off and then lacing up again to complete his second marathon in just over a week in 4:12:47.

John Eales was almost bang on five hours with a time of 5:00:13.  Star of the day was Keren Irving, winner of the club place.  She smiled her way around the course to complete her first marathon in 5:21:33 and looked like she loved every minute of it.

In the half distance, Mark Kennedy enjoyed a great run with a PB of
1:32:33, finishing 84th overall. Cathy Millar completed her second half marathon challenge in 2:27:51

Daffodil Dawdle

The Daffodil Dawdle was around the flat, muddy and windy fields of Newmarket. A 27 miler organised by the long distance walkers association with good food stops made up for complicated directions but ran in great company ... beware anyone else tempted to do lDWA events ...they are very addictive.

Well it was over marathon distance so have a guess who decided to do this one?  That's right....Sharrrrrrrrrky.  He managed, despite the mud and wind, to complete in a time of 6.03 and add yet another marathon to the ever growing list.

The Obelisk 'Obble II

NRR have been famed for hosting the Moulton 10K in recent years but in our 2014 move to Kingsthorpe, we lost a great race.  The Obelisk 'Obble was formed in September 2014 and opened as a trial for NRR members and the club decided to advance proceedings with a second version on Saturday 14th March.

Being a club with Road Runners in its name, it was fitting to fit into our eccentric nature and run most of the course off road.  There were two options available, an eight mile route and a 14.

Being regulars in these parts of the county, our members were amazed by the beauty of the route, some of the course that we haven't covered before giving NRR a real impetuous to make it a permanent fixture...food for thought maybe.

Well done to all members and friends who completed the route, the results are below (not that we were being that competitive surely).  There was no chip timing so the times may not be exact (of course).

Short - 8 miles
1:39:46 - John Dilworth, Jo Letts, Sue Summers, Seb Perry, Rachael Smith
2:17:08 - Micky Bogal, Ryan S

A huge well done to Jo for a PB of 2:01:22.  Tony recorded a brilliant finish of 1.20:41 on a good course and great support plus over 2000 runners.

Charnwood Marathon

It'sthe weekend so there is a fair chance that Sharky will be ding a marathon.  Yep, him, Eamon Kennedy and Darren Baldwin all ran the Charnwood Marathon.  Darren's was an accident by the way.

Suzanne Baldwin decided on the more sensible option of the half distance.

Both routes were escribed as beautiful, off road challenges.  One for the NRR crew in the future for sure.

The Battle Was Won

Naseby Battlefield Run
A great local event at Naseby, the Battlefield Run incorporated a duathon alongside three distances at running. The route took in some of the country's stunning countryside and offered some killer hill climbs, especially the long haul at Haselbech. Half marathoners had to do it twice.

With eight different events happening at once, it was hard to know who was doing what distance but thee was plenty of spirit on the course between competitors.

One slight niggle was a few snags to the organisation with some distances being undercut and a few runners taking wrong turnings. Perhaps the hosts took on a little too much.

A good note for the day was an optional t-shirt for purchase that included the names of all entrants plus a great route with a challenge.

The NRR crew turned out to try the running distances.

Congratulations to Rosanna Andrews who won the 5K event in 23:08.

Jo Letts completed the 10K in 40:49.

At half marathon distance there were some great finishes with two out of three in the top ten. Tony Letts was second in 1:21:26 and Daniel Cook third in 1:23:15. Mark Kennedy finished 11th overall in 1:35:08 and Roger Taylor crossed the line in 1:47:21.

Well done to Penny Andrews who was 1st MV50 with a time of 1:40:24.

Groundhog Day

The Groundhog Marathon
Some people will remember the classic film Groundhog Day where Bill Murray plays a weather man who wakes every morning to experience the same day.

Perhaps the Groundhog Marathon won't take days to complete but it was an incredible 105.5 laps of a running track in Telford.

Eamon Kennedy and Andy Sharky Cotters completed the gruelling event on Saturday 7th March. Not only was then an achievement in itself but Sharky also completed his challenge of 12 marathons in 12 months. Sometimes it is not always about speed.

Well done to Sharky, a full report will follow.

March March Begins

As February ended and March began, NRR ran various events across the country.

Belvoir Challenge
Saturday began with the Belvoir Challenge, Andy Sharky Cotters did his 11th marathon in 11 months, slogging it around in the mud in around six hours. Jocelyn Granger did the 15 miler in 3 hours.

Eleven members did the Parkrun at the same time (which wasn't quite as muddy.)

Coventry Half
Penny Andrews did the Coventry Half in 1:42 finishing a few minutes ahead of Jon Dilworth in 1:46

Berkhamsted Half
Another popular event in the NRR calender is the beautiful Berko Half (as it is fondly known locally).  Seven runners were treated to lovely sunshine around the hilly, countryside route.  Richard Wild and Wendy Parker grabbed massive PBs on a course not normally likened to a PB route.
