Croyland Park, a mythical venue on the X-C circuit whose deep muddy stream crossings strike fear into many a seasoned runner. This course had not been used for many years so was a new adventure for many of the Northampton Road Runners in attendance. Well it didn’t scare the 28 club stars who turned out for the 1st fixture of a new season. It included the old and bold, the shiny and new, and the inbetweeners.
Smart new trainers were soon hidden beneath a layer of mud and those in clean white socks soon realized why others were in tatty old black things found at the back of drawers for these occasions. It is not the water in the stream that is the problem it is the steep, muddy, slippery banks you have to climb to get out of the stream. Efforts ranged from graceful to comical and Alan (Hack) should have some good photos of our performances.
Things look good for the season with everyone promising to come along again and at least pretending they had enjoyed themselves. All deserve credit however we must mention our new members of the X-C club who must now expect me to be constantly badgering them. These were Kirsty Turner, Stuart Cressey, Matt Brand, Martin Andrews and Tony Kennedy. It is great to see such a good turn-out now compared with a few years ago when we struggled to get enough for a team.
