Dunstable Challenge (Downs Also Go Up...)

A handful of a mad NRR runners made their way to Dunstable on Sunday 12th September for the Dunstable Challenge. The "Challange" consisted of a half marathon, a 20 mile race or a full marathon but their was only one catch, you must run armed with a map. The route began up an energy sapping hill before taking in some breath-taking scenery from the top of the Downs (the climb was worth it). About every type of terrain was covered from grass, footpaths, mud, road, trail and even a ploughed field. Only a water crossing was missing!

It certianly wasn't a PB course but there was a genuine buzz at the finish with many runners swapping stories over a rolls and a cake. This race comes highly recomended to runners who fancy something different and the entry fee was a bargain at £8.

To the performences and four runners completed the 20 mile challenge; Maree Jesson contunied her great recent form with a 12th place finish and a time of 2:43:56 although her running skills are certainly better than her map reading, she clocked up 21.5 miles. Mark Garrett was the 2nd MV50 and 19th overall in a time of 2:53:05 only seconds ahead of Geoff Smith in 2:53:25. Ronnie Ambrose came home in 3:12:18.

Mark Kennedy opted for his favourite distance of a half marathon and was pleased with a 1:53:15 finish and a placing of 13th overall.
